Chapter Nine

Cathryn’s body went as rigid as ice. The bear, too, froze in surprise. For a moment that lasted forever, they stood there regarding each other in silence. There couldn’t have been more than four yards separating them, a distance that the beast could have closed in one swift, vicious charge.

Trembling now, she tried to remember what Ben had told her yesterday about this species while they had watched the three bears on the other side of the river. He had said that Alaskan brown bears were the largest in the world, more powerful than the ferocious grizzly. They were dangerous if aroused, but they were also easily frightened and stayed clear of humans. This one didn’t seem to know that.

There was nothing either useful or comforting in any of this information. If anything, she was even more terrified. And desperate. The animal was not lumbering away as she had hoped it would do.

Trying to quell her panic, Catbryn began to back off as slowly and carefully as she could manage. But even this cautious movement was a mistake. The bear began to growl, a threatening rumble deep in its throat.

Then another warning came from behind her. This time a welcome one.

“Cathryn, don’t move. Not a muscle. Stay just where you are.”

Ben! Thank God for Ben!

She obeyed him and remained perfectly still again. It was the hardest thing she had ever done. Every instinct inside her cried out for her to run into his arms. But she dared do nothing, not even turn her head to learn his intention.

She could hear him moving behind her, but it wasn’t until he appeared in her peripheral vision off to the right that she understood his purpose. He was creeping along the perimeter of the small clearing, clutching the first weapon he had been able to lay his hand on. He had snatched a length of wood from the fire. One end of it was glowing and smoking with heat.

The bear was aware of his activity, too, and didn’t like it. It was snarling now and stubbornly holding its ground as Ben advanced.

“I’m going to try to drive him off,” he informed her softly. “Or at least distract him. When that happens, and he’s paying more attention to me than you, I want you to dive into the Jeep and I want to hear the door slamming behind you.”

She opened her mouth to object, but he silenced her with a fierce “No arguments! Just do it.”

Cathryn waited, praying the bear would d the wise thing and retreat. It didn’t care for the hot menace waving slowly in Ben’s extended hand as he approached in a half crouch. The bear star led to back away. She was sure it would turn and run.

But a second later its mood’ changed The animal suddenly reared back with a challenging roar, growing to an immense size. And then it lunged.

Ben was ready for the attack. Just as one huge paw came the air, he rod and thrust the brand into the bear’s sensitive snout.
